Trees in urban habitats provide food and shelter to diverse insect fauna including ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). We investigated ladybirds on native Norway spruce (Picea abies) and non-native Blue spruce (Picea pungens) in urban habitats of four towns in Slovakia (Levice, Zvolen, Sliac, Zilina). Adults and larvae     of ladybirds were sampled using beating trays over two successive vegetation seasons, April 2021 – November 2021 and April 2022 – November 2022. Ladybirds were obtained from lower branches of 10 trees of each spruce species monthly at each locality. One sample constituted ladybirds from 10 branches. Altogether 640 trees of each spruce species were sampled. A total of 9211 adult ladybirds of 36 species were recorded. We found significantly higher abundance of ladybirds on native Norway spruce than on non-native Blue spruce (nearly 2.7-fold more adults and 2-fold more larvae). On Norway spruce we collected higher total number of species than on Blue spruce (34 vs. 27 species respectively). Species diversity of ladybird communities on both spruce species (based on Shannon diversity index) was similar, with the exception of the locality Sliac where the diversity was significantly higher on Blue spruce. Species composition of ladybird communities was similar between both spruce species. “Conifer specialists” of ladybirds significantly predominated in communities on both spruce species. Ten species of recorded ladybirds were “conifer specialists” (proportion 87 %), 23 species were non-conifer specialists (4 %) and 3 species were considered generalists (9 %). The eudominant ladybirds Exochomus quadripustulatus and Aphidecta obliterata (65 % of all individuals) were the same for both spruce species. We documented reproduction of the same ladybirds on Norway spruce and Blue spruce (11 species). “Conifer specialists” of ladybirds and invasive Harmonia axyridis prevailed among larvae. Our results suggest Norway spruce and Blue spruce to be hosts of species rich ladybird communities in urban habitats. Ladybirds as predators of aphids and coccids contribute to the biocontrol of pests in urban habitats, where using of pesticides is undesirable.

Diskusia
